The Marys Hope

To provide a suitable site for a multiple unit development; a site in close proximity to schools, job opportunities, healthcare, parklands and support services; maximum site density, an energy efficient design, low cost housing designs that meet the requirements of silver level for Liveable Housing Australia.

Challenges & Solutions

The sloped site became the challenge, however, this allowed for the tiering of all the units down the site which enabled each unit to achieve amazing views of the river Derwent below. The shape of the site required the design of the units to achieve physical separation and solar passive penetration. The unit footprints were marginally cut into the site to provide a solid base for the entry and bedrooms to comply with the silver level of Liveable Housing. The living room, kitchen and bathroom were then supported by an elevated timber and steel structure, cantilevering above each neighbouring unit.

“The team at Starbox Architecture have been partnering with Housing Choices Tasmania (HCT) in the delivery of a pipeline of social housing dwellings over the past five (5) years.

During this period Starbox Architecture provided a range of design work, from site planning to concept designs to full architectural drawings for over 260 new dwellings. Of these, 126 have already been delivered with a further 133 in the current pipeline.

Importantly, in addition to the quality high-end work that Starbox Architecture undertakes, Jaron and his team have been able to translate those quality concepts into a tightly constrained budget targeted to the delivery of social housing across Tasmania.

This capacity has resulted in the delivery of beautifully designed homes that are indistinguishable from the private market, creating a positive environment for residents.

Housing Choices Tasmania would recommend the architectural services of Starbox Architecture and looks forward to a continued partnership into the long term.”
